The Tippecanoe School Corporation welcomes two new school resource officers. Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Deputies Steven Stonerock and Jason Morgan join officers Aaron Gilman, Rob Rush and Beth Kidwell serving more than 13,800 students at 22 TSC school locations.

A joint commitment of resources between the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Department and the Tippecanoe School Corporation allows the TSC to add two more school resource officers.

“We value our partnership with the TSC,” says Sheriff Bob Goldsmith. “We are excited to offer this program to further engage young people and protect our schools. We’re fortunate in this community to have specially trained officers working in our local schools who have gained state and national attention for developing positive relationships with students and staff.”

School Resource Officers (SROs) promote a safe learning environment through educating and building relationships with students and staff members. While they serve as law enforcement officers, their primary focus is on helping young people learn about personal responsibility and how to make good decisions. SROs are in the classroom providing positive educational programming, in the hallways, lunchrooms and playgrounds engaging students in conversation and activities, and collaborating with school administrators and staff to evaluate and improve safety procedures that promote student safety.

“We are thankful for our partnership with the sheriff’s department and the opportunity to continue to grow the SRO program. School safety requires a community commitment,” says TSC Superintendent Dr. Scott Hanback. “The new officers will be based at McCutcheon and Harrison High Schools and will become an integral part of their respective school communities to foster positive relationships with our students and provide valuable resources to our staff.”

Deputy Stonerock, assigned to McCutcheon High School, holds an associate’s degree from Ivy Tech Community College, has 10 years of experience in law enforcement and served in the US Army.

“I know that becoming an SRO will allow me to have a positive impact on students and staff day in and day out,” says Stonerock. “I was formerly an Explorer advisor and loved my time working with youth. I am very much looking forward to working with TSC students and staff in my new role.”

Deputy Morgan, assigned to Harrison High School, holds a bachelor’s degree from Purdue University, has 20 years of experience in law enforcement and served in the Indiana and Florida National Guards.

“It is important to have positive interactions between students and law enforcement,” Morgan says. “I want the students to know Police Officers are there for them when needed. I want to continue to build trusting and respectful relationships between students, parents, and staff that the current SROs have already created.”

The two deputies will receive additional safe schools training this month before starting in their new role with the TSC.
