Happy Veterans Day. Thank you for your service

“Whenever Americans fight for freedom they very quickly learn F is for families, first and foremost, who wait for their return.” This is an excerpt from the book H is for Honor that fourth grade students are reading at Mintonye Elementary School. The class will also be making cards that will go to veterans at St. Anthony’s Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Lafayette.

Elsewhere, students gathered for a convocation to pay tribute to those who have served and those who continue to serve our country. They watched videos, listened to special readings and enjoyed performances of patriotic songs by band and choir groups. At Cole Elementary School, each grade level performed songs and handed out thank you cards and poppies made from red tissue paper to visiting veterans. Some of the schools livestreamed their programs for family members and others to enjoy. Other schools produced virtual programs and shared the link to the videos with their families.

At Harrison High School, the names of local veterans from every branch of the military cover the walls near the main entrance. The Raiders for Red, White and Blue Club created the display to raise awareness and funds for veterans in need.

Club sponsors Jill Baker and Erin LaGuire took a group of students to the Indiana Veterans Home to help transport veterans who use walkers or who are wheelchair-bound to the annual program. “We helped with COVID-19 protocol check-ins and also handed out programs,” says Baker. “We assisted with setting up for bingo and spent the afternoon with the residents playing bingo. Most importantly, we paid attention to the veterans, heard their stories and thanked them for their service. The club also purchased special prices that were given away to the bingo winners. It was a great day of service.”
